CHAMPAMATI IRRIGATION PROJECT (MAJOR) IN BONGAIGAON AND KOKRAJHAR DISTRICT

Three hilly rivers, Viz, Bhur, Dholpani and Laopani, originating from the foot hills of Bhutan, meet together and below the confluence the river takes the CHAMPAMATI having maximum and minimum discharge of 1128 cumec and 13 cumec respectively, which is one of the major tributaries of the mighty river Brahmaputra in the North Bank.
Champamati irrigation project is second major project in Assam. The Project was cleared by Planning Commission, Govt. of India in April'1980 and administratively approved in July of the same year. The Project was programmed for completion within a span of 4(four) years. But bottlenecks like poor fund flow, non-availibility of scarce matterials at the initial stages, land acquisition problems and absence of working atmosphere for a few years resulted in dragging the completion of the project. This in turn necessitated revision of the estimatted cost due to escalation in prices of matterials and increase in labour wages. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 8th five year plan.

The barrage, constructed across Champamati river, is located at Uttar Nagdarbari village near Garubhasa at altitude 26o-36' N and longitude 90o-22' E. It is at a distance of 25 km from Bongaigaon and 28 km. from Kokrajhar and is located in Bodo Autonomous Council area. The project by this partial operation will anually irrigate 330 Ha of cultivable land  through left bank main cannal upto a length of 2100 m out of projected area of 24,994 Ha on completion.
Upto the end of March'95 an area of 31,020 Ha. have been brought under irrigation through Minor and Medium Irrigation Schemes out of gross cultivable area of 264,710 Ha of Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar Districts, covering 11.7%.
