Sericulture is one of the most important Agro based employment generating activities in Bongaigaon district. Climatic conditions are favorable for cultivation of crops like Eri, Muga and Mulberry for silk worms rearing. The activity is traditional cottage industry specially practiced by the local people including SC/ST families in the district. Most of these activities except for growing of plantation and rearing are basically non-farm activites associated with sericulture are covered in this section. The aim is basically to provide further incentive to traditional rearers of the district by way of providing quality seed and seedlings.

To achieve a phased development of sericulture the infrastrucure requirement identified are:

A. 7  Nos of Seeding Nurseries

Fisheries :

The district of Bongaigaon is endowed with fisheries resources in the form of Ponds/Tanks, Beel, Swamps, Low-lying area, Derelict water bodies and diverse networks of river and revulents. The number and area of these resources are as under:

Cashewnut Plantation:

There is great demand of  fruits like cashewnut all over Assam, the soil and climatic condition of Bongaigaon District holds great potentiality for plantation of cashewnut, but due to lack of proper finance and technical knowledge, farmers are not interested in plantation of cashewnut in large scale.But DRDA, Bongaigaon for the first time has taken up a demonstration plot of land measuring 5 ha in Borobazr Development block in Bijni sub-division for cashewnut plantation under Jowahar Gram Samriddhi Yojna 2001-2002  to motivate the farmers towards growing cashewnut as a cash crop.

Under this scheme 5 ha of land was selected taking 44 nos of farmers from 5 Gaon Panchayat area. A very fresh and good quality of seedlings have been supplied by the Assam Seed Corporation, Bijni Branch and was duly distributed to the farmers. Till date total 1038 nos of quality cashewnut seedlings have been distributed and planted.

The plantation work has been successfully completed . It is expected that the farmers will get good return from 4th year onwards.
